Hanwha Eagles vs. KIA Tigers: Over 9 (-106)

The Hanwha Eagles and KIA Tigers throw the first pitch on a three-game series at Gwangju-KIA Champions Field. It should be a matchup for the offenses, as neither pitcher offers much to like here.

The Eagles’ Um Sang-back posted a career-high 2.95 ERA in 2022, but has otherwise been off the mark in his KBO career. In 10 years, nine of which were with the Wiz, Um has recorded an ERA above 4.00 in eight seasons. Additionally, Um owns a career ERA of 4.88 and 1.44 WHIP.

Through 37.1 innings this season, the 28-year-old starter holds a 6.27 ERA and 1.79 WHIP. Over his last three starts, Um conceded 11 earned runs, 20 hits, and five home runs! For the home club, I’m not convinced starter Yoon Young-choel has it in him to counter for the Eagles.

Yoon has posted a record of 0-5 and a 6.75 ERA and 2.00 WHIP through seven games and 24 innings pitched. In three years, the 21-year-old youngster has notched a 4.38 ERA and 1.51 WHIP in the KBO. The Tigers rank third in the KBO, with 51 home runs, so he may run into issues with the long ball.

SSG Landers vs. KT Wiz: Under 9 (-118)

From a high-scoring battle of the bats to a pitcher’s duel at Suwon Baseball Stadium. The Landers, who rank second-last in the league, with a team batting average of .238, are likely to struggle versus ace So Hyeong-jun.

The 23-year-old has been lights out for the second consecutive season. He finished with a 3.24 ERA and 0.96 WHIP a year ago and has built on that campaign. So has gone 60.2 innings with just 15 earned runs and two home runs yielded!

In his latest start against the Landers, So lasted seven innings with five hits and no earned runs allowed. At home on Friday, expect So to hold his own against the Landers. Additionally, So is on fire as of late, with two straight starts and 13 innings of scoreless baseball.

The Landers’ best chance is riding the hot hand of starter Jeon Young-jun. The pitcher hits the bump in the opening frame with a 3.55 ERA and 1.50 WHIP. He’s been in sharp form, with one earned run allowed in back-to-back starts entering Friday’s assignment. Also, note that Jeon has allowed just one home run over his previous 12.2 innings.
